It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

...er, Happy Halloween everyone! I've been working on Christmas swaps for the past two days and almost forgot about Halloween. Wanda and friends send greetings as well.
Now, about those Christmas swaps. I'm so excited about how they are turning out but I can't show any pictures. I will post them sometime next month, though, I promise!

Moving furniture

But not in my real house. I did some bed swapping in the dollhouses and reworked my very first attempt at a brass bed. The original bed was made 20 years ago and I was never completely happy with it. Plus it didn't really fit well in the room I made it for. I took it apart, added some bits, painted the whole thing to look like a painted iron bed and put it in Magnolia Way. It looks more like a bed that Kate would have and has the added advantage of actually being long enough for her, lol. I'll find a home for the short little kit bed that was in her room.
Rearranging the bedroom meant I needed to find a spot for her painting. That fits nicely in the living room in front of the window so she has good light. I had to rearrange the living room to fit that in but at least moving mini furniture is not too difficult. I didn't have to strain any muscles at all. :-)

Progress on the twin's dollhouse

These photos are all before the door and window holes are cut out and there's a wall cabinet to hang over the sink/stove combination. The Dora border will also act as a backsplash for the kitchen.
There's also still a lot of accessorizing to do but much progress was made today.

I forgot to take a pic of the exterior. Theresa has chosen a bright pink, a dark rose and white. It's going to be a very pretty little house. I promise there will be photos when everything is finished.

Just to see if I could

Here are gingerbread houses in one inch, 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch scales. The picture is bad and I'm sorry. The green is not really quite that bright. They turned out well, though, even if the photo is blurry. You'll just have to take my word for it, lol.

Please help me welcome Anama
She's my 96th follower and appears to have just started her blog. Stop by and say hello.

A little time to mini

This is another one of those crazy weeks here but I did find time to make this little gingerbread house. I needed to replace the one that the puppy ate several months ago. Apparently, she did me a favor because I like this one much better, lol.

Bathroom fixtures

I already had a tub for the dollhouse so I've been looking for an inexpensive toilet. I knew it wouldn't be difficult to make some sort of sink/vanity combo. I looked at Dollar Tree where I've found bathroom sets before to no avail. So, in desperation, I designed my own. The part that had me stumped was making a seat with a lid that opened.Yesterday I finished a bottle of liquid dish detergent and there was my mini toilet seat, lol. The bowl is a small wooden egg cup style communion cup. The tank is made with miscellaneous wood bits. The sink and vanity are in a bookcase. I removed the top shelves, glued in a mirror and cut small rounded shelves from craft sticks. The faucet is a screw hook, the sink is a lid. It is all very sturdy and "playable."

Wanda got her own little scene

The Halloween hutch is no longer in my shop. I decided that Wanda needed her own permanent spot so I'm keeping the hutch. I also made a perch for Walter, the owl, and a bubbling cauldron over a fire. The base is just a scrap piece of 1x4 that I gave a faux stone finish. Wanda is not permanently fastened down so I can have her tending the fire or looking through the cabinet. I decided that she's not a very successful witch. She's green because of a spell gone bad while trying to turn the frog into a prince she instead turned herself green and you can see that the frog is still hopping around. Wanda does not look too happy about it either. :-)

It's Not Easy Being Green

This is Wanda. She was inspired by the orange leather witch's hat and owl made by Sandy Copeland for a recent swap. I added the band and feather to the hat and sculpted and dressed Wanda. Her owl is perched on a witch's hutch from my etsy shop. This is the first doll of this sort I've ever made. It was nice to not have to worry much about "pretty", although Wanda is dressed in her best dress and curled her hair especially for Halloween. ;0)
What do you all think?

A good day

It's rainy and gloomy here but things are looking up just the same. A situation that has been causing some major stress here at home is now improving. Yay! Now I can mini just for fun and not just as a stress reliever, lol.

I think I'm going to work on a new doll just for me today. We'll see how it comes out...

Happy Friday everyone!

Much better

I thought the wood needed to be a warmer color so I stained it maple today. The little table looks really nice, I think. I used a stain pen for the plastic legs. I also made the Tinker Bell rug and the pot of flowers. Everything should be kid safe and cozy for the dollhouse inhabitants. There's also an entertainment center for this room but I've already given it to my friend. It's a rustic green with Tink on the doors.

I'm a little goofy right now 'cause I printed all of the wallpaper and sealed it. I did it outside but I still inhaled far more than I should have. I can't the smell out of my nose, lol.

Welcome!

Please help me welcome Suzan. Her blog is called Kankadolls and Miniatures and features some wonderful paper mache' dolls as well as other beautiful minis.

More for the little girls' dollhouse

This furniture was kind of an experiment but I think it turned out fairly well. It's pretty sturdy so should stand up to the girls' play. The table is just a pizza saver with a wood disc glued to the top. The couch and chair frames are made from square dowel and miscellaneous wood scraps.

I also got the downstairs cleaned today. I think I could have stuffed several real sized pillows with the fur I cleaned from the floor and furniture. They are starting to shed less now that the weather has cooled down but the floors still get pretty disgusting, lol.

Hope you all had a great start to your week!

Now to shed a little light on the subject

And here they are...the little lights. These candles were all made from dollar store pencil erasers. The unburned ones just have white thread wicks and are glazed with matte varnish. The burned ones have the wicks tipped with black and are rougher around the top edges. I used thick tacky glue to make the drips and the whole thing was glazed with the matte varnish. The candle holders were made from some stud jewelry findings I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby. The darker blue candles are on pedestal style holders made with the studs on jewelry finding bases. The other candle holders are made with the studs mounted on woodsie bases and then decorated. These are so simple but look so real when finished.

I finally got the doll out of my head...

...and into the oven. Sounds awful, doesn't it? She's now out of the oven and dressed. I present to you...Helene, the aging starlet.Helene Tyler was a starlet in Hollywood’s “glory days.” Born Helen Jones, Helene moved to California at 18 and was soon picked up by one of the major studios. She was talented enough to move quickly into major roles based on her acting skills, rather than her bedroom skills as many of her peers did. Her brown eyes and blonde hair gave her a unique look. Her blonde hair now comes from a bottle but her brown eyes are still sparkling and vibrant. She still acts on occasion when the right part is presented but mostly she adds character and class to awards programs these days. She won’t tell her real age but if you look closely you can see the signs of aging that even her plastic surgeon can’t quite eliminate.

New followers...I think

The number of followers I have has been going up and down this week. As I looked through the list trying to figure out what was different, I found three people that I don't think I welcomed. They don't appear to have blogspot blogs so I don't have any othe information but please help me welcome rudoo, Anne_Marie_Elliot and FabShabbyRoses. Thank you all for stopping by! Please forgive me if you've been following me for awhile and I'm just now welcoming you. The way the followers show up is sometimes confusing...or maybe it's just me that's confused, lol.

Busy day

I was on the go all day. Saw the doctor early this morning...and I didn't have to wait! I'm gonna have to stick to that time of day. I did a little shopping and found some things that will eventually become minis. More of that another day.

My daughter and I met with a wedding photographer at Starbucks. She's hired and the coffee was good.

It was a productive day but I'm glad tomorrow is currently not booked.

There really will be minis here soon...I promise.

PS I'm jealous of all of the dollhouse finds from the thrift store. I keep looking but no luck yet.

A wonderful surprise!

I just got the November issue of American Miniaturist and was delighted to find my doctor's office featured in the ittybits section of the magazine. The article turned out beautifully! All of you fellow bloggers were mentioned with a particular mention of Doreen who suggested the caption for the room. Thanks everyone!

I can't upload photos right now for some reason. Blogspot is being difficult tonight. You can see the room in the post for April 12, called "Complete with Trim."

Not minis but still fun

It occurred to me today that October is half over. (BTW, today is the one year anniversary of my surgery for endometrial cancer - so far, all is great!) Usually by now I've at least started making our Christmas cards. Since the closer we get to the new year, the more time I'll be spending on wedding stuff, I decided today was a good day to design and start this year's cards. They are simple, but elegant this year. The cardinal is the Indiana state bird and I love that little pop of color at the bottom.
Hubby needed some cards for the people he shepherds at church so I also made these. A productive and crafty day...even if I didn't make anything tiny. :0)

Wedding vs. minis

Well, the past few days have been devoted to wedding planning and organizing. The wedding is still 10 months away but that time will go quickly. I put together a guest book for my daughter, using a beautiful "Once Upon a Time" scrapbook she found. You can see it here.

Today I've been working on my part of the guest list, final proofing of the invitations (designed and soon to be printed by me, :-) ) and just generally organizing all of the paperwork into something everyone can read. My quick scrawls on random pieces of paper were just not cutting it.

There will be more minis coming soon. I promise!

Another award!

Thank you, Doreen, for this Dream Blog award. I am honored to be one of the blogs she reads every day. Since I just awarded several people the Kreativ Blogger award and the awards seem to be travelling quickly around blogland, I am going to break the rules for this one and just award it to Meg at Inside My Head .

Meg is not a miniaturist but she is my daughter and I read her blog regularly. She's a college student who's planning her wedding and dealing daily with chronic illness. And the little girl in the award picture makes me think of Meg when she was little. :-)

The rules are:1. Show the image of the award, and state rules.2. Post the link of the person that gave you the prize.3. Display 10 blogs to which you grant the award.4. Advise the blogs listed.

Ta Da!

While I was working on the quilt I decided to use it in the dollhouse that represents my real house. While I liked what I had before it didn't really look like anything hubby and I have ever had in our bedroom. So I tore the entire bed apart and made a new headboard based on my real one. I also made new curtains and table cloths for the room. It looks great!
The house is a Christmas house all the time because it's my favorite holiday. Hubby plays the French horn, there's a dollhouse in the corner because most of my dollhouses are in our room. I'm so excited about how the redecorating turned out!

Mini quilt, ala Casey

The first time I alternated navy and green, every other one. That made a striped effect that I didn't want. So I tried again with two navy, two green. I like the resulting pattern much better. This is a great way to use up old bias tape or woven ribbon. I had some of each on hand from one of my mom's craft supply sorting sessions. I tend to get what she no longer wants or needs. :0) I like the blues and greens in the quilt. I'm not sure what I'm going to use for the backing fabric yet. I need to raid the fabric drawers to see what I can find. I'll post photos of the finished quilt.

Not much mini-ing happening here

Life has kept me busy this week and my daughters are both on fall break from college through Wednesday so I'm not sure when I'll get back to my work room. I hope to do a small project but nothing big for a few days anyway. Hope you all have a great weekend!

PS I'm so glad to see Debbie back in blogland!

I figured it out

How to do the ice and water dispenser, that is. It isn't as crooked as it looks in the picture, though. It's set into the door so you could actually put a mini glass in it. I also added shelves to the inside of the doors. My friend is happy.

The next room is the living room. I need to make a couch and chair.

The finished appliances

Here they are. The glue is still drying on some pieces but I'm very happy with the results. If I were to do something like this for an adult's dollhouse I would make the handles much less "clunky." They are perfect, though, for little girls.
The faucet is a screw hook and I reused the cabinet knobs I removed for the handles. The stove knobs are just beads. The fridge and oven handles are strips of balsa sanded into shape and painted.

Feeling better and a project in progress

Thanks again for all of the get well wishes. I am already feeling better and hope to be back to normal (or as normal as I get, lol) within a couple of days.

I'm still working on the dollhouse for my friend's nieces. The kitchen in the house is really tiny so I'm converting a couple of Michael's hutches into the appliances. The double door cabinet is going to become a refrigerator with double doors and a freezer drawer below. I removed the legs and knobs. The other cabinet has been taken apart by microwaving it. The top half will basically stay the same. I just added a shelf to the bottom. I removed the legs from the bottom half, drilled out a sink hole and used the container my daughter's contacts come in for the sink. The cabinet door on the right will become the oven, with an oven style handle. The top on the right will have a cooktop with button burners. The shallow hutches will help with playing room in such a tiny room.

The results are in

Thank you all for your good wishes. Turns out that my potassium level is "critically low." I already take prescription potassium so they doubled my dose. I should be feeling better soon. I can already see some improvement.

I'm hoping to get back to making minis soon. I really don't like being sick!

Hope you all have a great day!

Off to the doctor

Well, I've been sick for a week and I'm just not getting better so hubby is taking me to see the doctor. Back later...
